Van Koningsbruggen was trained at the Royal Academy of Art and the Free Academy, both in The Hague, and at Ateliers '63 (Haarlem). He started making his 'sliding' paintings 'informally' around 1974 by putting paint on one canvas and sliding a second canvas over it; This automatically created more or less parallel lines of paint on both canvases, which he usually presented as a diptych or quadtych. One canvas was the brush for the other canvas. Van Koningsbruggen saw this working technique as an informal painting method in which the result of the painting is created anonymously, without much influence from the maker's personal handwriting. The informal idea is central to this period.
From 1980 onwards, colors became more important in his work. This is how he developed his own color circle. His later paintings are often characterized by simple shapes such as a circle, a rectangle or a funnel.
