Last photo: indication of auction value
Sam Middleton left his native Harlem neighborhood in New York City to travel the world as a sailor in the U.S. Merchant Navy. By the mid-1950s, he was still leading a nomadic existence, but abroad he had by then gained recognition as a serious and talented visual artist. Like many Black Americans before him, Middleton found solace in an environment where racial relations were less sensitive than in the United States. He therefore settled abroad and built his career from Amsterdam. Middleton has enjoyed international critical acclaim for over fifty years. In the United States, his works are on display at the Whitney Museum in New York, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.
