Besides his theatrical work and poetry, Hermans was also a painter. He did this purely for recreation and never wanted to be in the spotlight. Therefore, he almost never exhibited his paintings. In November 2004, a public auction of some of his paintings brought in an unexpected sum of over €600,000. Most of this amount went to the Toon Hermans Huis foundation, an organization founded by Hermans to care for cancer patients and their families.
In 2003, a calligraphy group from the IJmond region set a record by creating the world's largest calligraphic work and compiling it into a book. The book consists of over 7,400 A4 pages containing calligraphed texts by Toon Hermans. The Toon Hermans BV Foundation granted permission to use the texts. The pages were glued together to create a concertina book over 2 meters high. It weighs 55 kilos and stretches over 2 kilometers. It uses 5 kilometers of tape and 3 liters of ink. Maurice Hermans, Hermans' son, was also involved in the project. A few years after Hermans' death, a self-portrait of him was discovered during renovations in a house on Paardenstraat in Sittard. He had likely painted it for a friend who lived there at the time.
If you'd like to view the artworks we offer before the auction ends, you're welcome to visit our shop in Purmerend. Please send us a message or email in advance to schedule an appointment. After the auction, you can choose from various shipping (PostNL), delivery (Swift or our own courier), and/or pickup options (depending on the size and fragility of the item). We'll pack carefully and use sufficient material (bubble wrap/MDF boards) to minimize any damage. For multiple purchases, we'll combine shipping whenever possible to keep costs low. Pickup is possible anytime up to one month after purchase! If you need more time, that's always negotiable. Our artworks are often loose-leaf or in the wrong frame – a professional mat or new frame can truly complete your purchase. For sound advice, a wide selection, and an excellent price-quality ratio, we've been working with the framers at Frame4U for some time now. You can have Frame4U handle the framing and mat installation yourself, or we can take care of it for you. The cost doesn't matter; the choice is yours.
