Willem van Leusden (Utrecht, 25 September 1886 - there, 8 March 1974) was a painter who lived in Utrecht and from the age of 23 in Maarsseveen.
Van Leusden was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He obtained the royal subsidy for young artists for three years.
He was affiliated with the Burgeravondschool where he gave drawing lessons to boys.
In his free work he went through a development from realistic, via abstract paintings and furniture that fit in the tradition of De Stijl, to surrealistic work. Van Leusden also trained in various etching and engraving techniques. Together with the artists Jopie Moesman and Willem Wagenaar, he formed the core of the group of surrealists who were active in Utrecht in the period 1930 to 1950. He was also a member of the graphic company De Luis.
He gained great fame in the graphic arts circles through his research into the graphic technique of Hercules Seghers. After much insistence, he published his findings in 1960.
Willem van Leusden died in the Oudenrijn hospital in Utrecht.
