Charles J. Kemper (Heemstede 1913 - Rotterdam 1985)
Rotterdam painter Charles Kemper attended the academy in his hometown and subsequently (1947) took lessons from H.F. Boot in Haarlem. He painted and watercolored the city, harbors, figures, and portraits. His interiors of cafes and pubs constitute a distinct genre within this genre. From 1951, Kemper, along with Kees Franse, Jan Goedhart, Ed van Zanden, and later Jan Burgerhout, was part of the Rotterdam exhibition group Argus. His interest in the expanding city, industrial activity, and the decline of the countryside made him ideally suited as a draftsman for the topographical atlas of the Rotterdam municipal archives. Kemper was a member of Pulchri Studio in The Hague and the Association of Hague Watercolorists, among others.
