Constance Wibaut (1920-2014)
Constance Wibaut, of whom the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag owns more than 2,100 fashion drawings and sketches. Constance Wibaut was trained as a sculptor, but was very successful in the 1950s and 1960s as a fashion illustrator and fashion journalist for Elsevier's Weekblad. In this she reported on the new fashion with allure in word and image. For this she visited the couture shows in Paris, where it was forbidden to draw, let alone photograph. Wibaut remembered what she saw sharply and worked out her notes at lightning speed during the shows. She was then able to make appointments with the couture houses to see a number of models up close. Wibaut then made sketches (croquis), which she then developed into beautiful, lively black and white drawings, sometimes colored with gouache (paint).
