Grass HEYEN (Ter Apel 1917 - Amsterdam 1988)
Heyen was a wall painter, glass painter, painter, sculptor, graphic artist and above all a striking personality. Training at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam and at L? Cole Estienne in Paris. He lived and worked in Bussum, Amsterdam, Paris, Fez, Tunis and Arles (France). As far as his work is concerned, Gras Heyen was not easily categorized into specific genres. He was probably too individualistic to focus on painting movements and probably also too critical to ever use the same umbrella. He was primarily a graphic artist, a technique that entails a thoughtful and therefore somewhat distant approach. On the death of artist Gras Heyen in 1998, Jan Vrijman wrote: 'He unmasked the cliché as much as the anti-clich_. He pulverized thick solemnity, but also the pale-nosed irony. His humor went to the bone. There are a thousand stories about Grass and each of us has our own favorite memory of it.' In his book Passions, Kees van Kooten devotes a chapter to Gras Heyen and his famous statement ?The Queen is an asshole and the princesses is also an asshole ...?. Work by Gras Heyen is part of the collection of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
