Jacob Adriaan (Jacques) van MOURIK (Amsterdam 1879 - Plasmolen 1971)
Dutch painter, who has lived and worked for a large part of his life in Plasmolen, a village near Mook, Limburg.
Partly because of its presence, many artists came to Plasmolen at the beginning of the 20th century and an artists' colony was created. He mainly painted and drew forest scenes, horses and portraits. Lifecycle
Van Mourik was born as the son of Cornelis van Mourik and Jonkvrouwe Maria van der Goes. He followed courses at the Academy of Visual Arts in Düsseldorf and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he was taught by Prof. Allebé, among others.
In the Second World War, the gallery where his work hung was hit during the bombing of Nijmegen and a large part of his work was lost. His house in Plasmolen was destroyed during the September days of 1944. After the war he lived temporarily in Berg en Dal. Van Mourik received many portrait commissions, partly thanks to Louis de Bourbon, mayor of Oss and poet, who had gone into hiding with Van Mourik. From 1954, Van Mourik lived in a new house in Plasmolen that had been built by his daughter on the foundations of the destroyed house.
Until shortly before his death, Van Mourik was active as a visual artist. He was cremated in Dieren with great interest.
