Sam MIDDLETON (New York City 1927 - Schagen 2015)
Sam Middleton is a self-taught artist. After growing up in Harlem and having lived in many countries (Mexico, Japan, Spain, and Sweden), Sam Middleton settled in the Netherlands in 1961. Middleton lived in Amsterdam for many years, but fascinated by the landscape, he settled in Schagen, at the northern tip of North Holland.
Middleton is self-taught but has taught at Ateliers '63 Haarlem and the Royal Academy in Den Bosch. For Middleton, both music—classical music, jazz, and pop—and the Dutch landscape have formed the climate in which his abstract expressionist works originate. Middleton incorporated musical scores and photographs into his collages. These collages possess a balanced aesthetic and rhythmic equilibrium created by a subtly applied spatial arrangement, often featuring a transparent painted background and the addition of a wide variety of graphic elements.
Exhibitions and prizes:
The work of Sam Middleton can be seen in museums all over the world. In addition to the Netherlands—including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Museum Van Bommel van Dam—his work is also in Australia and Israel.
