Toni Elster (1862 -1948 )
Painter
Toni ELSTER (Bremen 1862 - Munich 1948)
Toni Elster belonged to the Bremen Kunstlerinnen (art teacher) group, who were active as professional painters around 1900. At that time, it was hardly accepted that women painted professionally (though they did so as a leisure activity), and they were therefore derisively called "Malweiber." Toni Elster was successful; at the time, her paintings hung in the Kunsthalle in Bremen. Around 2002, there was an exhibition in Bremen about this group of "Malweiber," at which several of Toni Elster's harbor scenes received rave reviews.
