Magic realism was used to distinguish between the representational and expressionist trends in contemporary art. Later this changed to the Neue Sachlichkeit. The works are recognizable by the almost photographic depiction of realistic scenes that have a mysterious or magical atmosphere. This atmosphere is evoked by the use of unclear perspectives and unusual combinations of subjects. This connects reality with another or higher reality. Magic realism is therefore related to surrealism.
