Adam Colton (Manchester, 1957) attended the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in London from 1975 to 1980 and settled in the Netherlands in the early 1980s. For his earliest drawings and sculptures, he took his own body as a starting point. He carefully measured it and converted its spatial proportions into a pattern of points and lines, from which meticulous drawings emerged. This pattern was also applied to the working of large plaster blocks. By systematically chipping away parts, he allowed the form to emerge from the block, creating sculptures which he calls Carvings. The starting point was then no longer visible. Colton plays with transformation processes. He moves from three-dimensional to flat and back again; he enlarges, reduces, and disrupts, until his starting object begins to 'swing', as he calls it himself. In 1987, Colton received the Charlotte van Pallandt Prize for Sculpture, and in 1991, the Sandberg Prize from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
