Dolf Zwerver 1932-2010
Dolf Zwerver, the son of a painter and advertising artist, lived the first years of his life in Oranjewoud, Friesland. Shortly before the Second World War, the Zwerver family moved from Friesland to Utrecht. Zwerver was self-taught and worked as an advertising painter, sailor, carpenter, warehouse clerk, and window cleaner, among other things. In the late 1950s, he focused on a career as a fine painter. In 1965, he was 'discovered' at a competition for amateur painters organized by the magazine Eva, and subsequently, over the course of a few years, he developed into a high-level fine painter. Zwerver's oeuvre is characterized by dreamy, reflective paintings. Serene gardens, mazes, and forests form a recurring backdrop. Both Oranjewoud and the Rhijnauwen estate near Utrecht were frequent sources of inspiration. His most famous work is the Large Triptych Sanssouci, on which he worked for a total of ten years. Zwerver's work can be seen in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, among others. He also exhibited at the Rembrandt House and had two major retrospectives at Zeist Castle. The writer and poet Ingmar Heytze regularly used the work as covers for his poetry collections. Zwerver was affiliated with the Kunstliefde Society. Zwerver is buried at Soestbergen Cemetery in Utrecht.
If you'd like to view the artworks we offer before the auction ends, you're welcome to visit our shop in Purmerend. Please send us a message or email in advance to schedule an appointment. After the auction, you can choose from various shipping (PostNL), delivery (Swift or our own courier), and/or pickup options (depending on the size and fragility of the item). We'll pack carefully and use sufficient material (bubble wrap/MDF boards) to minimize any damage. For multiple purchases, we'll combine shipping whenever possible to keep costs low. Pickup is possible anytime up to one month after purchase! If you need more time, that's always negotiable. Our artworks are often loose-leaf or in the wrong frame – a professional mat or new frame can truly complete your purchase. For sound advice, a wide selection, and an excellent price-quality ratio, we've been working with the framers at Frame4U for some time now. You can have Frame4U handle the framing and mat installation yourself, or we can take care of it for you. The cost doesn't matter; the choice is yours.
