About this painting

"A Portrait of a Painter" is a very special work by Eugène Brands from 1966, in which he expressively depicts the portrait of a painter. The work strongly resembles his Cobra style from the late 1940s and early 1950s, using the same color palette. The gouache is signed and dated lower right "Brands '66." The work is in good condition and has a beautiful frame. Provenance: The well-known former art dealership ML de Boer Art Gallery, Amsterdam.

About Eugène Brands

Eugène Brands (1913–2002) was an important Dutch painter. He was briefly associated with the renowned CoBrA artist group.

In 1946, Brands participated in the group exhibition "Young Painters" at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. His experimental work during the war years played a significant role for CoBrA artists like Appel, Constant, and Corneille. Shortly after the exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1949, where CoBrA presented itself for the first time in the Netherlands, Brands left the CoBrA group.

In the 1950s, he retreated to his studio and drew inspiration from the drawings of his young daughter Eugénie. In the 1960s, he returned to the color palette associated with CoBrA. Throughout his life, Brands was fascinated by the cosmos, stars, and planets, as well as by the mystery of life. His credo was "Panta rhei"—everything flows, everything moves.
