  • Félix Labisse was a French surrealist painter, illustrator and set designer. He was of Flemish and Polish descent and worked in both France and Belgium.
  • Labisse was self-taught. At a young age he came into contact with James Ensor in Ostend, with whom he became friends for life. In 1927 he set up his own studio there. His work was influenced by Ensor and he had contacts with Constant Permeke and Leon Spilliaert. Labisse worked mainly with oil paint on canvas. He also created the staging and backgrounds for theater performances. In 1951 he staged the play Le Diable et le Bon Dieu by Jean Paul Sartre at the Théâtre Antoine in Paris and in 1954 he staged the play Les Mystères de Paris by Albert Vidalie under the direction of Georges Vitaly at the Théâtre La Bruyère in Paris.
  • Labisse's work was also influenced by Paul Delvaux and René Magritte. Important motifs in his work are eroticism and Freudian themes. He described his own work as 'libidoscaphes'.
  • In 1947, the director Alain Resnais made a short documentary about Labisse in which he filmed and interrogated him while working in his studio under the title Visite à Félix Labisse. In 1966 he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. A retrospective of his work was shown in 1973 in the Rotterdam Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
