Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in Enschede in 1940. His father died in 1942, leaving Jan's upbringing entirely to his mother. Jan's mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war, Jan Cremer was placed in foster families and children's homes by Child Protective Services. In the 1950s, he held various jobs, served in the Marines, and worked for some time as a sailor on ocean-going vessels. In 1958, he spent several months studying at the art academies in Arnhem and The Hague. Cremer lived on Ibiza for a while and left for New York in 1964. Afterward, he lived alternately in America and Europe. As a writer, Cremer became instantly famous with "Ik Jan Cremer" (1964). It is a picaresque novel featuring sex, violence, and adventure. Consequently, the literary quality of his work was not regarded very highly by everyone. The novel was banned from libraries for a long time. "Ik Jan Cremer" was published in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travelogues and plays. Jan Cremer's art consists of paintings, prints, and gouaches, and often depicts Dutch, as well as Italian, landscapes in vibrant colors.
