Jan Versnel (Amsterdam, February 24, 1924 - Durgerdam, July 1, 2007) was a Dutch interior, product and architecture photographer. He became known, among other things, for his involvement in the architectural movement Nieuwe Bouwen.
Biography
Versnel never received specific training as a photographer. He went to the Graphic School, where he was trained as a lithographer and also received his first lessons in photography. He then completed an advertising course at the Institute for Applied Arts Education; here he was taught by the architectural photographer Jaap d'Oliveira. After completing the training, he was employed by photographer Nico Jesse.
In 1947 Versnel established himself as an independent photographer and soon received an assignment from Gerrit Rietveld. Thanks to the support of photographer Eva Besnyö, he was able to become a member of the GKf, a trade organization that also included more progressive photographers.
He gradually specialized in architectural photography: photos he took of a new construction project in Rotterdam attracted attention when they were presented during a meeting attended by a number of well-known architects. From 1951 onwards his photos also appeared regularly in the architecture magazine Forum. Accelerate is mainly associated with the architectural movement of new construction. He worked for architects Marcel Breuer, Aldo van Eyck and Jan Rietveld, among others. As a product and interior photographer he worked with designers Kho Liang Ie and Benno Premsela.
His architectural photos are characterized by the fact that they often show people (this is not always common in architectural photography) and that the entire image is filled. Cloudy skies at the top of the image and a striking light-dark contrast are also typical. He preferred to choose special positions.
From 1971 to 1983 he taught at the Rietveld Academy.
