Luis Filcer (Zhitomir, 1927 - 2018)
Luis Filcer was born in Ukraine in 1927. His Jewish family left for Mexico in the 1930s, fearing pogroms, where Filcer subsequently grew up. At the age of 17, he began his painting studies at the San Carlos Academy of Art. He won several art competitions and represented Mexico at various Biennales in Chile, Japan, and England. After receiving a scholarship, Filcer studied and worked at various art academies in Europe. Filcer also settled in the Netherlands for a time, where he lived and worked for twenty years. Filcer paints the contradictions within humanity on social, economic, and religious levels. His works show us various (unpleasant) human relationships. For instance, he depicts abuse of power and unbalanced authoritarian relations. He portrays the decadent judiciary with enormous bodies and an ironic smile. The hypocritical bourgeoisie and corrupt clerical power also feature in Filcer's work. He invariably sides with the weak. Thus, he also paints fishermen, beggars, farmers, and prostitutes because he feels connected to them. His paintings are an indictment, a protest against the heartlessness of those who pull the strings. However, Filcer also paints human pleasure and sultry nights. For instance, the Amsterdam red light district in the 1960s made a great impression on Filcer. In addition, Filcer depicts simple, down-to-earth people full of primal feelings of love, loyalty, and connection.
