Klompien was the youngest son of an inland waterway skipper who died in 1918. Therefore, after primary school, he had to start working immediately and held various jobs. From 1934 onwards, he took evening classes at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Stad, now known as the Minerva Academy.
In 1955, he joined the art circle De Ploeg, where he was the youngest member. According to Klompien, his older colleagues had rigid views on art and little room for innovation. Five years later, he therefore joined the Groningen artists' group Nu, which brought together diverse artists from the province.
