Wilhelm Heinrich (Willem) Klijn werd in 1892 in Amsterdam geboren, hij volgde er de Academie en kreeg lessen van zijn schilderende vader.
Gedurende een korte tijd woonde hij in Brussel.
In Amsterdam sloot hij zich aan bij de realisten en was lid van de Onafhankelijke, De Brug en St Lucas.
De kunstenaarsvereniging de Onafhankelijken is nog altijd actief.
De Brug heeft bestaan van 1926 tot 1996 en had als doel de introductie van de nieuwe zakelijkheid.
Leden waren Charley Toorop, Dick Ket , Theo Swagemakers en Willem Vaarzon Morel.
Hij ontwikkelde zich tot een veelzijdig kunstenaar: schilder, aquarellist, etser en lithograaf, waarbij hij zich vooral toelegde op landschappen, stillevens en stadsgezichten.
Willem Klijn werkte onder meer in Amsterdam, Brussel, Wijk aan Zee, Den Helder en Zandvoort en overleed in 1961 in zijn geboortestad.
