Born 1901 in Leerdam. Died 1991 in The Hague
AD Copier is probably the best known and most important glass designer in the Netherlands. Copier started working for Glasfabriek Leerdam at the age of 13. The director at the time saw a talent for drawing in the young glass etcher and sent him to the typography course in Utrecht and then to the Academy of Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam. In 1923, at the age of 22, Copier was officially employed by Leerdam as a glass artist. In 1924 AD Copier designed his first Leerdam Unica.
Besides his work as a glass artist, he was also very important as a designer of industrial glass for the Glass Factory Leerdam, culminating in the famous Gilde service with the gilde glass (wine glass) that is still being produced. Besides Leerdam, Copier also worked for other important glass factories in Murano, Acquoy and Novy Bor. From 1950-52 Andries Copier was director of the School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam (Thans Rietveld Academy)
Copier's glass is widely collected and is in many private and museum collections around the world.
