Schelfhout belongs to the Dutch Romantic movement and is known as a precursor of the Hague School. His style is inspired by that of Meindert Hobbema and Jacob van Ruisdael. Especially his winter and ice landscapes with skaters were already very popular during his lifetime. He became one of the most influential Dutch landscape painters of his century.
The work was made by Schelfhout and lithographed by J,J, van der Maaten.
