Painter-writer Jan Cremer was born in Enschede in 1940. As a visual artist, he has specialized in graphic techniques from the start of his studies at the various art academies he attended.
In 1957 he paints the first of a series of paintings that would become known as Peinture Barbarisme. In 1958 he has his first one-man exhibition in Galerie de Posthoorn in The Hague and he joins the Posthoorngroep. A year later he exhibited in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague and in 1960 in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
Dozens of exhibitions at home and abroad followed. With a grant from the French government, he leaves in 1959 for Paris, where he ends up in the Rue Santeuil, the famous hide warehouse with the studios of Bogart, Appel and Corneille, among others.
From 1961 to 1963, Jan Cremer lives and works on the Spanish island of Ibiza, where he forms part of the Grupo Ibiza with, among others, KF Dahmen and Erwin Bechtold.
