Vintage foto van één van de belangrijkste zwarte fotografen ten tijde van de Civil Rights Movement in het Amerika van de jaren 50 en 60.  Gelatinezilverdruk, ongesigneerd maar in verso uitgebreid gestempeld.  Saunders maakte deze foto in de vroege jaren 50 voor Black Star, de agency waar o.a. Robert Capa, Andreas Feininger en Henri Cartier-Bresson ook voor gewerkt hebben.  In goede conditie; enkel wat kleine kreukjes en krasjes langs de randen.

Richard Saunders (1922 - 1987)


Saunders, Bermudian by birth, spent virtually all of his working life in the United States, establishing himself as a highly respected photojournalist. His work appeared in leading publications such as Life, the New York Times, Paris-Match, Fortune, Look, Ebony and Ladies’ Home Journal and the United States Information Agency’s magazine Topic, which was geared towards African audiences.


Henry Kissinger, Leonard Bernstein, Malcolm X, Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad, author James Baldwin and singers James Brown and Abbey Lincoln were among the famous figures Saunders captured on film. His work is in the permanent collections of the New York Public Library, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, the Bermuda Archives and the Bermuda National Gallery.
