This is a beautiful etching on handmade paper by Willem Minderman (1910 - 1985). It depicts a cityscape of Prinsessegracht as seen from the Malieveld in The Hague. In the background, the skyline of the historic buildings and the recognizable spire are visible. This copy is signed in pencil in the lower left corner and annotated "self-printed" in the lower right, confirming that the artist printed this image by hand. The work is professionally framed in a fine, classic wooden frame with a gold-colored trim.
Willem Minderman was a painter, draftsman, and etcher. He developed his own style in his countless drawings, mostly of the dunes, and in the etchings he later made for the De Haagse Etsclub. By limiting himself to black and white, Minderman demonstrates a great richness of expressive possibilities. The standard of his work is high and balanced.
