Anton Mauve was an important artist in his time. He gave Vincent van Gogh painting lessons, which had a fairly large influence on him. From 1854 to 1857 Anton Mauve worked as an apprentice in the studio of Pieter Frederik van Os. He was also a student with Wouter Verschuur. This enabled him to develop his own style and painting skills. The Hollandsche Drawing Company was also co-founded by Anton Mauve.
Anton Mauve also co-founded the Larense School and during this time the years were his most productive. In 1888 Anton Mauve died of an aneurysm, and Vincent van Gogh dedicated a painting to him called Souvenir de Mauve.
