Steef SWEETMULDER (Schiedam 1911 - Rotterdam 2004)
Photographer. Studied from 1933-1935 at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by Gerrit Kiljan (design/advertising) and Jan Kamman (photography) among others. Style: the New Objectivity (before 1945), Subjective Photography (after 1945).
His entire oeuvre testifies to a preference for decorative images that tend towards abstraction. For his commissioned photography and his free work, Zoetmulder preferred to experiment in the studio. He combined shapes (angular, round, hard or soft) with vases, glassware or other objects to compose still lifes. Sometimes he made portraits in combination with shapes and objects. The design of the photos was determined by the effects of the lines, the light and the suggestive perspective effect. As an extension of this lay his predilection for photomontage.
In 1987 he stops with commissioned work and devotes himself entirely to free work. In 1934 Zoetmulder, Zoetmulder received the first of more than 30 awards. He has participated in more than a hundred exhibitions on three continents and is prominent in the history of Dutch photography.
