Royal Society of Painter-Etchers

Founded in 1880

Royal Society of Painter-Etchers

The Royal Society of Painter-Etchers was founded as the Society of Painter Etchers in 1880, and received the Royal Charter in 1888. It is an art institution based in London. The association was founded to promote etching as a true art form. The Royal Acedmy of Arts refused to exhibit prints and engravings. The inspiration for this creation came from the group of the same name that was active in France. Since 1920, artists who used a medium other than metal for making prints were also allowed to join. Since 1991 the association has been called the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.
