A beautiful painting by Wil Bouthoorn, perhaps the most underrated member of the New Hague School.
Interesting composition and use of color, framed with a subtle wooden frame, tightly fitting the canvas. Directly from the artist's daughter.
Signed and dated lower right by the artist.
Bouthoorn was born on November 21, 1916, in The Hague and died on May 26, 2004, at the age of 87, in his studio. Wil Bouthoorn trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (1937-40 and 1949-50), where he was taught by Paul Citroen, Rein Drayer, and Willem Rozendaal.
Bouthoorn has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. His first solo exhibition was in 1951 at the Hague Kunstking, and he has also exhibited at Galerie de Posthoorn in 1958, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven (1961), the Hague Gemeentemuseum (1963 and 1965), and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1992). Outside the Netherlands, he has exhibited in England, France, and the USA, among other countries.
He became a teacher at the Vrije Academie in The Hague (1968-91). His style was recognized with numerous awards. He won the Jacob Maris Prize for materials in 1954 and 1964, and the Jacob Hartog Prize in 1957 and 1999. In 1991, he received the Ouborg Prize from the city of The Hague. He was a member of Pulchri Studio from 1956 onwards, a member of the Verve group, belonged to the Posthoorn Group, and in the 1950s, a member of the Voorburg artistic group De Nieuwe Ploeg. Bouthoorn began his artistic career with figurative work. His later work became increasingly abstract, and after 1980, figurative details disappeared entirely. Humanity was central to Bouthoorn's work.
In 2006, a mural by Bouthoorn from 1977 was restored in an old school in The Hague on Goudenregenstraat. (Source: nieuwehaagseschool.nl)
