The album contains sketches of scenery and costumes for performances from 1908 to 1929. There are performances in the history of the theatre whose enormous, resounding success, being an expression of deep processes in the life of art, immediately raises them to the level of landmark events. They are kept in memory, as nations remember great battles, eyewitnesses tell their children and grandchildren about them, turning reality into legends. This happens when features of new content in art, born of the demands of the time, long accumulated latently, suddenly, as if by an explosive wave, overturn conservative, obsolete forms that hinder their development. Such a performance was the premiere of Hugo Hernani's drama, which in 1830 began the offensive march of romanticism on the French stage, such was the production of The Seagull at the Moscow Art Theatre, which opened a new era in the performing arts. The touring performances of Russian opera and ballet in Paris in 1908 and 1909 should rightfully be included among such events. They were called Russian Seasons, as they were repeated over a number of years.
