CONSTANT ( Amsterdam 1920 - Utrecht 2005)
Education: From 1939 to 1942, Constant studied at the School of Applied Arts and the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. He lived and worked in Amsterdam.
Constant co-founded the COBRA movement, a movement that emerged within modern art in the late 1940s. Constant was among those who included Karel Appel, Corneille, Anton Rooskens, Jan Nieuwenhuijs, Eugene Brands, Lucebert, and Theo Wolvecamp, the more theoretical figure of this style. Constant Nieuwenhuys painted still lifes, self-portraits, animals, flowers, and non-figurative works. After meeting Asger Jorn, imaginary animals, aggressive and frightening, and human figures appeared in his paintings. War paintings emerged in 1950. In the late 1950s, he developed ideas about the ideal city of New Babylon. In the 1970s, he focused more on drawing and painting, with old masters as his main source of inspiration.
Belongs to the following movements/groups: CoBrA
