Herve Carrier (1932-2000)

Herve CARRIER was born October 13, 1932 in Martigues (Bouches-du-Rh_ne). He interrupted his studies after 15 years and painted his first picture. Apprentice of Merlin Gerin, dissatisfied with his professional responsibilities, he cultivates rampant absenteeism that allows him to explore the museum. His first art book is a monograph in which he dufy copying the view of the old port of Marseille dated 1925. He then discovered modern painting with the booklets published by Hazan in the early 1950s. His first exhibition was held in Grenoble against the bookseller Guilmin in February 1957, his work is then in the form of non-figurative gouaches painted freely inspired by Fernand Leger. In 1963 he accepted a post as a guard in the art museum of Grenoble, after 1970 the management of the reserves became his main activity in the museum . In 1961 he made sculptures made of poor materials, often fragments of objects, sometimes articulated. While she prefers these montages a playful approach sculpture that tries to reconcile with his interest in primitive art. Due to the ideological ferment of the time, it stops each individual production in 1968 for a group activity with Dody and Unal.
