Jacques ZON (The Hague 1872 - The Hague 1932)
Graphic artist, painter, draftsman, book decoration designer. As a thirteen-year-old boy, Zon received drawing and painting lessons from the well-known landscape painter Willem Maris (1844-1910). His education is continued at the academies in The Hague and Antwerp. In addition, he receives a royal subsidy for three years. This allows him to work in the studio of the important painter Fernand Cormon (1845-1924) in Paris. After his return to The Hague in 1893, Zon works as a decorative painter and poster designer. Despite his success, he decided to follow his heart around 1902 and chose to be a free artist. He registers with various artists' associations and takes part in almost all exhibitions organized there. He also shows and sells many drawings, watercolors and paintings abroad. Initially, Jacques Zon painted moody landscapes with polder workers, following the example of his teacher. These paintings are characterized by a dark, sober use of color and strong brushstrokes. 'Schaftijd' dates from that early period. Jacques Zon also spent some time working in villages such as Laren and Heeze. He mainly paints peasant interiors with figures. These were very popular with the public at the beginning of the twentieth century because of the cozy and intimate atmosphere. Even a famous painter like Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915) buys a watercolor from him. After the First World War , Jacques Zon travels through Belgium , France and Italy . The coast of Brittany especially appeals to him. He falls in love with the fishing village of Concarneau, which inspires him to countless representations of the sea, the beach and the fishing boats. Influenced by the southern landscape and French modern art, Jacques Zon's use of color and working method change. He paints in lighter tones and with more refined brushstrokes. This gives his landscapes and cityscapes a sunny and lively appearance. Art critics write highly of these later works.
