Lucie van DAM VAN ISSELT (Bergen op Zoom, 1871 - The Hague, 1947)
As a young lady growing up in Kampen, Lucie van Dam van Isselt took drawing and painting lessons from Johannes Daniel Belmer. She was educated at the Hague Academy from 1891 to 1894 and from that last year began to exhibit, mainly drawings.
Between 1907 and 1911 she did not participate in any exhibition, later she regarded this period mainly as a period of study and reflection. She received new impetus from the Belgian artist Théo van Rijsselberghe (1862-1926). On his advice, she broadened her field of work in 1908 by taking lessons in painting, etching and lithography with her old friend Auguste Morisot (1857-1951), professor at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon. She probably also spent some time in Paris en route.
Lucie eventually decided to specialize in painting flowers and small still lifes; she made her debut with this at the first Domburgsche Tentoonstelling.
