Potterie Hans Wagner (1949-1972)

Pottery Hans Wagner

Founded in Utrecht by Henry Emile (Hans) Wagner (Haarlem 1916 - Nieuwegein 1991)

In 1949 the company Potterie Hans Wagner starts up. A workshop has been found in the Dorstige Hartsteeg in Utrecht. This will be converted into a pottery workshop and residence. The turner is Barend Pot, Hans does the decorations and the models, Johanna's wife assists with all kinds of hand and span services and also does the filling in. However, she does not run. In the same year 1949 son Hans was born here. The work is signed with HW. Throughout the company's existence, the emphasis has been on shovel-turned handicrafts. An exception are, for example, the triangular trays that were initially cast by brother Emile in a casting mold.

The red-baked clay for Potterie Hans Wagner is obtained from Vingerling in Gouda. The glazes come from Germany. There is initially one large electric oven. Three smaller ones will be added later. After a few years, the company moves to the Lange Nieuwstraat 64 building.

The delivery of the characteristic ceramics with decors scratched into the tin glaze can be found in the better craft shops in the Netherlands, Germany and, above all, Belgium. Hans Wagner is his own representative and delivery person.

In January 1960 he and his wife had a serious accident while delivering an order on their way back from Antwerp. Hans is in serious condition. Months of rehabilitation follow. He then suffers from amnesia and his character changes greatly. There are currently ten employees in the company. Due to the situation that has arisen, there is a major setback. The company is slowly recovering from the slump.

In 1969 a second huge setback followed when the only son Hans died at the age of twenty. In the meantime, the company moves – due to the expansion of the children's hospital – from Lange Nieuwstraat 64 to number 76. But partly due to the loss of son Hans, it goes downhill and the company closes in 1972. Hans dies in Nieuwegein on August 8, 1991.
