Rococo

Founded in 1720 - dissolved in 1780

Rococo

Rococo is a light, sensual, decorative style that was developed in France during the early eighteenth century. Rococo is a reaction to the Baroque style that prevailed at the time, and had its heyday in the 1720s to 1780s. Rococo can be recognized by its playful and graceful shapes. Asymmetry and irregularity are also common within the Rococo style. In addition to applied art, this style was also found in interior decoration and as a decoration of porcelain. The term rococo comes from the French word for rock rubble, rocaille. This is based on the shapes of sea shells and coral that were used as decorative in the Baroque period. Opponents of the Rococo did not think the works were serious enough, and the style was too much in the service of the decadent upper class. Therefore, Rococo was considered only a decorative style. When the style of neoclassicism slowly emerged, the interest in the rococo style disappeared and it gradually disappeared.
