Chris Tugwell was born in Durban, Natal in 1938 and has been painting professionally all his life. He is today recognised as one of South Africa's fore- most landscape artists, having exhibited regularly in all the main centres including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, etc. His work is much sought-after by both local and overseas col- lectors.
His beautiful studio is situated in the Magaliesburg Mountains in the village of Kosmos, overlooking the Hartbeespoort Dam, on the Crocodile River. A keen bird watcher and boating enthusiast, much of his sketching and observation of nature is done on boating "safaris".
Best known for his ability to capture the brilliant light of the sun-drenched Transvaal highveld, the atmosphere of the old tobacco farms, and the cattle ranches of the Magaliesburg district, his work reveals an intense awareness and responsiveness to the vast and spacious African veld, and shows a sensitive observation of cloud formations and the influence of the sky on the landscape.
The subtle and poetic moods of nature interest him more than the dramatic and highly colourful, and it- is his delicate rendering of these moods that has become a hallmark of his style.
