Nyoman Gunarsa is a contemporary Indonesian artist whose work blends Balinese and Hindu folklore with expressionistic figurative forms. Depicting traditional dancers, musicians, and religious figures, the artist imbues each work with ecstatic emotion. “I am drawn towards lines like singing and placing colors like dancing,” he said of his working method. Born on April 15, 1944 in Banda, Indonesia, he attended the Indonesia Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta during the 1970s before moving towards abstraction in the 1980s. His work has been met with critical acclaim, garnering shows and awards such as the Jakarta Biennale of 1978 and 1980, and the Pratisara Affandi Adi Karya Art Award in 1976.
