André Hallet was a Belgian Post-Impressionist painter known worldwide for African subjects. He began his artistic education at the atelier of Belgian painterRichard Heintz, after he completed his studies under the tutorship of Adrien de Witte at the Academy of Art in Liège. Hallet had discovered the South of France, as well as southern Italy and Sicily in 1919. He worked in Bruges and finally settled in Louvain in 1920.
Hallet traveled to the Belgian Congo on a mission for the first time in 1934, under the high demand of the Ministry of Colonies, after his fellow colleague Fernand Allard L'Olivier had died accidentally. Hallet long cherished the hope of discovering the Congo. Having been given the reputation of "the painter of light" he wanted to try and test that confront his brush could have evocative power of the sun there where he developed his palette with exuberant and warm colours. It was between the painter and Africa, a long love story. Hundreds of kilometers on bush tracks. He continued to travel in search of new lights, sailing thousands of kilometers of rivers in the Central Basin, braving the scorching hours of torment and insects. He was seduced by the river sites that are discovered through exotic trees, the dawn and the sunset, the vastness of an ever-changing landscape, the artist seeks pleasure in the study of Aboriginal kinds that work as it is a beautiful example. During one of his trips to Kigali and Nyanza, André Hallet made portraits of King Mwami Rudahigwa Mutara III.
In 1936, André Hallet was invited to participate in "The Big Show" at Galerie Giroux in Brussels, the most famous galleries in Belgium early 20th century. There were a hundred people who were invited to the opening, as well as the presence of several artists like Van Nest, Delaunoy, Franz Courtens and Allard L'Olivier's widow. More than 120 paintings, 58 lent by their owners, adorned several showrooms. It was a resounding success for both former Belgian Congo finding their "Congo" with emotion and nostalgia for other visitors who felt an irresistible desire to know. This painting took on the appearance of a solemn manifestation of sympathy for the artist. All the exhibits was a true panoramic evocation of Congo diversity of the regions crossed by the many scenes of native life and the variety of types camped in their familiar gestures.
André Hallet returned to the Belgian Congo in October 1936 due to his success that it ranked among the masters of African painting. But it would have been inconsistent with his obstinate character, more concerned to prepare the effort to delight in the satisfaction of the work performed. He traveled to many places including the cities most interesting were Goma, Lake Kivu, Bujumbura, and Kanda-Kanda Luputa before returning to Leopoldville.
In April 1947, he moved permanently to Lake Kivu where he remained until his death in April 1959. Three months before his death in Belgium came to him their last respects. In January 1959, Queen Elizabeth left a reception at Government House to visit him. She lingered long before his works and he expressed his admiration excited. No, his country had not forgotten, and it was affirmed by his Queen. This warm presence in his workshop brought him a certain serenity, as if it were an expected goal and the annihilation of any ambition.
His paintings have been donated by the Fondation André Hallet for charitable causes, as "Doctors Without Borders" to help Cambodian orphans in 1992, and the Alumni Association of the Congo (NWAC), a concern for the oldest philanthropic civilizations still living in the Congo, and Jacques Brel international Foundation for research against cancer.
