''Giotto Stoppino (Vigevano 1926 - Milan 2011) was an Italian architect and designer, one of the major exponents of Italian design. After studying architecture in Venice and Milan he worked from 1953 to
1968 in the Architetti Associati studio with V. Gregotti and L. Meneghetti, participating in the Milanese exhibition "New designs for Italian furniture" in 1960. In 1968 he founded his own independent studio focusing on the design of furnishings by participating in numerous international exhibitions, including the Milan Triennale and, in 1972, the exhibition "Italy: the New domestic landscape" held at Moma in New York.
Among the inspirers of neoliberty, he was later among the first to experiment with the use of plastic in furnishings. His creations include the Cavour armchair (1959) for SIM and then for Poltrona Frau, the magazine rack for Kartell (1972), the Drop 1 table lamp (1976) for Tronconi, the Menhir tables (1983) for Acerbis.
He was president of the Association for industrial design (ADI) from 1982 to 1984 and of the Congress of ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design).
As designer he also collaborated with important companies in the sector and received prestigious awards, including two Compassi d'oro, in 1979 for the Sheraton furniture by Acerbis and in 1991 for the Alessia handle by Olivari.
Following the lessons held at the Palermo university, in 1994 Stoppino published the book "From the nature of materials to design", a scheme of his lessons illustrated with his drawings.''
