Biography
Son of Maurilio and Jop Maria. In his youth he helped his father by becoming familiar with wood and work tools and dedicated his free time to drawing. In 1927 he began working for a furniture maker in S. Osvaldo, near Udine and then worked at the "Lamborghini" ski factory in Udine, as a foreman for finishing skis and sports equipment. In the two-year period 1933-1934 he did his military service in Bolzano and Trento, in the field artillery, where he carried out the duties of a topography designer. In 1936 he married Caterina Nascimbeni, from Tolmezzo, with whom he had three children: Ausilia (1938), Paolo (1941) and Aldo (1946).
At the urging of a friend he began his activity as a xylographer in 1942; he builds the gouges, gravers, tablets and the small press himself. He made his first ex libris while employed at the Cantieri Navali di Monfalcone (Gorizia) as a building designer and naval decorator. In 1943 he moved to Cave di Selz, a small hamlet of Ronchi dei Legionari (from where Gabriele D'Annunzio left for the Fiume enterprise), near Monfalcone. During World War II he engraved many stamps for the partisan brigades, also reproducing stamps of German commands and offices, used to compose passes for the partisans and Italian soldiers coming from the Eastern Front.
After the liberation he took part in an art exhibition for the first time. A year later (1946) one of his woodcuts was awarded for the first time at the "Premio Dama Bianca" exhibition in Gorizia. Organizes his first solo exhibition in Trieste. He publishes a portfolio of 10 woodcuts on "Roman and medieval Trieste". He created the first decorative panels also modeled in bas-relief and in the round and engraved. He began his activity as an organizer of graphic art exhibitions. In 1953 he founded the Association of Venetian Engravers-AIV with Giovanni Giuliani, Virgilio Tramontin, Remo Wolf and Giorgio Trentin and participated in the first International Woodcut Exhibition "Xylon" in Zurich; he was made an honorary member of "The Society of Wood Engravers" in London. In 1958 he created his first series of stamps for the Italian Post Office.
He moved to Genoa and became the principal of the Genoese branch of the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin (which later became the Liceo Artistico Statale di Genova), a role that he occupied between 1967 and 1971. Continuous experimentation in various artistic techniques: fresco, graffiti, mosaic, linocut, stained glass, tapestry weaving, fabric printing, book illustration, advertising graphics, decoration of glass, architectural decoration, architectural modeling, use of plastic materials.
In 1966 he created several engravings commissioned by Secco Sistemi for commemorative purposes of the company; the edition was made in 500 numbered copies and printed with the original woodcuts and signed by the engraver[1]. He was appointed corresponding member of the Royal Albertina Academy of Belgium, then honorary member of the "Royal Society of Painter, Etchers and Engravers" of London; the cardinal of Turin Anastasio Ballestrero of the order of the Discalced Friars of the Blessed Virgin of Carmel promoted him the volume "Santa Teresa di Gesù", his best-known work, completed in 1984. The following year he moved to Ronco Scrivia. In 1986 he founded the Xilon Italiana - Association of Italian Xylographers; he is elected president.
Following a heart attack he died on 26 March 1992 in Ronco Scrivia.
